I am so excited to see what this weekend’s activities will being to our sisterhood! It is only the second weekend with the new members who were just added to our chapter, and I can honesty say that they have already begun to show what amazing assets they will be to Alpha Phi. Throughout this weekend, we planned sisterhood events to deepen the friendships and ties which have begun to form not only between the newer sisters, but also with those who are older.

This morning Alpha Phi hosted a sisterhood paint balling trip to Matt’s Outback Paintball in Coventry, CT. It was truly a sight to see 100 girls dressed in Alpha Phi apparel, working together to try and get the flags from the other side of the paintball course. Pictured above are Kristen Quann (senior), Lauren Harrigan (freshman) and Kelsey OToole (sophomore). We had an absolute blast and even brought home an honorary member to Alpha Phi – Charlie, an abandoned Labrador Retriever! He will be residing in an off campus house with a few of our sisters.

Later tonight, after everyone has cleaned up the paint from this morning, we are having a Sisterhood Camp Out. We have rented tents and sleeping bags for all of our women and will be camping out in the backyard of one of our sister’s houses (walking distance from campus). I am so excited to share Alpha Phi stories and memories around the campfire and to get to know everyone even more.

With that, I should probably go clean the paint out of my hair and get ready for the event.

Thanks for keeping up with our blog!

..Well, I think so at least! Homecoming 2010 is right around the corner and every participating organization on campus has been busily choreographing dances, designing banners, and building floats, all with the same goal of becoming the winners of UConn Homecoming 2010. In Alpha Phi, this is the time of the year where we see the most talent out of girls that we never expect to see, whether it’s dancing, singing, and overall, creativity.

With a Disney theme, “Remember the Magic,” we were excited to receive “Peter Pan” as our team’s theme. Our homecoming chairs, Stephanie Bousquet and Kristina Irwin have been working extremely hard to get everything together, and I am so proud and amazed by all that they have accomplished. (They did lead us to Greek Sing victory, afterall.) Together, they have created the lipsync performance that we will present to a sold out Gampel Pavilion, designed the costumes, coordinated events, booked busses, a float and so much more, in collaboration with our homecoming partners, SAE and TKE. I can hardly contain my excitement for what we will accomplish and have amazing expectations for what is to come.

One of the greatest parts of homecoming is meeting so many new people. I know that when I first joined Alpha Phi, I made some great friends through lip sync with our partner fraternity. Whether its bonding with a dance partner, or just getting to enjoy the homecoming game together, it is a great way to get to meet people you never would have otherwise, and I am excited to create friendships with SAE and TKE as well throughout this time together.

With less than two weeks to go, we are in non-stop preparation mode for this exciting time. I hope that our new members enjoy this experience as much as we do, and get to use this opportunity to bond with not only each other, and our team, but get a glimpse of the excitement they will experience in greek life here at UConn.

AOE,

Monday night was bid night and we could not have asked for better new Alpha Phis! They are all so beautiful, talented and smart! I am so excited to work with them as their Director of New Member Education. Our Director of New Member Orientation is Becky Delande, and our Director of Member Education is Amy Hecht. The three of us, especially Becky and I, will be working very closely together to make the girls’ new member period incredible.

We have so many fun things planned for the girls so that they can all get to know one another within their New Member Class as well as with the entire chapter as a whole. There are going to be weekly meetings and dinners, as well sisterhood events such as our paint-balling trip that we have planned for next Saturday. Just last night we had a barbecue at the house and then all went out for a night of fun dancing at Huskies and had an amazing time. I am so glad that I get to work with these fabulous young women for the next six weeks because they are all going to bring so much to our chapter.

Our new Phis are: Shammie Abul, Ayjan Arik, Shelby Artkop, Tory Barron, Brittany Bousquet, Kelsey Brault, Stephanie Brin, Taylor Brown, Kaylyn Caliri, Brooke Cohen, Christina Conway, Dana Cutler, Sarah Dassouki, Isabelle Gambino, Alicia Garcia, Kim Gennaro, Daniela Gonzales, Caili Guzman, Lauren Harrigan, Ali Hmminger, Lindsey Honig, Caroline LaRosa, Meghan Ledan, Gaby Levesque, Jessica Metcalf, Sarah Mulcahy, Rachel Papaioannou, Jaimie Parness, Kyra Pelz-Walsh, Michelle Punzalan, Allie Risbridger, Danielle Robustelli, Emma Scymanski, Liz Sfondrini, Maya Simons, Mia Sinatro.

I am so excited to welcome these girls into our sisterhood and I hope that they know that Becky and myself are here for anything they need, as well as any of the other sisters. Alpha Phi has completely changed not only my college experience but my life, and I cannot imagine where I would be without my sisters. I can only hope that our new girls have unforgettable experiences, and that Alpha Phi touches their life in the same way it has mine.

Love & AOE,

Erin Donlon, Director of New Member Education

Part of maintaining a thriving sorority is continuing the legacy of sisterhood after members graduate by recruiting new younger members to carry out the Alpha Phi mission. Fortunately, our campus Panhellenic Council hosts a formal recruitment process during the Fall Semester that draws in hundreds of potential new members for sororities to meet.

As the Vice President of Membership Recruitment, my department and I have been busily planning for formal recruitment all year. As you can imagine, it is difficult to convey all Alpha Phi embodies in just a few hours, especially to girls who are unfamiliar with the Greek system. However after a few days of preparation, the Alpha Phis are excited to meet and inform potential new members all about UConn Greek Life, as Formal Recruitment begins this Friday!

Monday marks the last day of recruitment, which will commence with Bid Night where Alpha Phi will welcome its newest members. At that point, our New Member Educator, Jessica Stonger, will take over the show, teaching these girls all that it means to be an Alpha Phi.

Until Then,

Sarah Mahonski

You may think that going “back to school” would become lackluster as a senior, however, my experience is quite the opposite. The start to a new year does mean a return to some things; the same house, same friends, and the same dining hall food, however, there are many new and exciting things happening as well. New ideas from sisters such as Sam Keyes, Jackie Golicz, Kayla Jowdy, Kate Antonio, and Kristin Saladis who all attended Greek leadership conferences this summer. New updates to our home, D1 Husky Village, including paint, wood floors, appliances and even new laundry machines! And perhaps the most exciting of all, new members to join Alpha Phi.

As a founding member of the Iota Lambda chapter I am beyond thrilled to see that the legacy of our sisterhood (a truly unique one at that) will continue on with the younger members of Alpha Phi. Our sisterhood encompasses all different types of women, whose talents and personalities shine throughout the 4 days of recruiting new members. With the help of the Panhellenic Council which governs all social sororities on campus, we hope that recruitment will be even more successful than ever this year. You can check out the Panhellenic recruitment video here to let you know a little bit more about Alpha Phi as well as other UConn sororities!

Be sure to check back on the blog for updates on recruitment, bid day, homecoming, etc. from all of our officers throughout this fall.

Enjoy the last weeks of summer,

Kristen
